States and Capitals

(sing to the tune of "Oh Susannah"--kinda long, but the kids love it)

Oh, I come from ALABAMA with MONTGOMERY on my knee
Then up north to ALASKA did JUNEAU the snow I see
Back down to ARIZONA with a PHOENIX in the sky
Then onward west to ARKANSAS got a LITTLE ROCK in my eye

Oh, COLORADO, it's DENVER all the way
Then on east to CONNECTICUT in HARTFORD I will stay

I trekked on south to DELAWARE where DOVER waits for me
Then went to swim in FLORIDA in TALLAHASSEE
Then I dried off in GEORGIA in ATLANTA this is true
Then sailed off to HAWAII for a stay in HONOLULU

Oh CALIFORNIA, SACREMENTO's gold for me
For now I'm off to IDAHO for all the BOISE to see

Well, I got stopped in ILLINOIS, SPRINGFIELD to be exact
When INDIANA called and said, INDIANAPOLIS wants you back
Instead I went to IOWA, DES MOINES and groans were real
When I dropped a house in KANSAS in TOPEKA's biggest field

Oh, KENTUCKY with FRANKFORTs good to eat
LOUISIANA offered BATON ROUGE to smear my cheek

In MAINE I saw AUGUSTAs Gloop To MARYLAND to go
ANNAPOLIS took him away, I tell you it is so
In MASSACHUSETTS way up north there's BOSTON tea to sip
Then I can flee to MICHIGAN and sail a LANSING ship.

Oh MINNESOTA, SAINT PAUL is living there
In MISSISSIPPI Mr. JACKSON tries to fix his hair

When I get to MISSOURI I am halfway 'round the nation
And I honk real loudly as I pull into JEFFERSON CITY station
But back up north I head and there's MONTANA in my sight
And I decide HELENA is the place to spend the night

Oh, NEBRASKA, was LINCOLN on your penny
As it rolled west to NEVADA landing right in CARSON CITY

NEW HAMPSHIRE beckoned me to vote, I CONCORD all the pain
In NEW JERSEY I saw TRENTON Toney, he still looks the same
NEW MEXICO is way out west with SANTA FE and elves
But I flew east to see NEW YORK and shop from ALBANY's shelves

Oh, NORTH CAROLINA, a jolly RALEIGH state
In NORTH DAKOTA, Mr. BISMARCK has a dinner date

OHIO hosts a famous name, COLUMBUS is the one
In OREGON the hunt is on for witches in SALEM
I steal away to PENNSYLVANIA, HARRISBURG and then
I almost missed little RHODE ISLAND but PROVIDENCE stepped in

Oh, SOUTH CAROLINA, COLUMBIA is there
And then there's SOUTH DAKOTA where lives handsome French PIERRE

Now I can't wait for TENNESSEE, and be a NASHVILLE star
Then way down south in TEXAS I'll let AUSTIN drive my car
Now I must visit UTAH, SALT LAKE CITY is so near
Then on to beautiful green VERMONT whose capital's MONTPELIER

Oh, VIRGINIA, where RICHMOND roam the fields
I'll run a race in WASHINGTON with OLYMPIA at my heels

In WEST VIRGINIA I will stop and dance the CHARLESTON
But WISCONSIN tells me Come on by and play with MADISON
WYOMING has a gift for me in a pasture in CHEYENNE
So I'll gallop home to OKLAHOMA as fast as I can

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oh don't you cry for me
For the 50 states and capitals were such a sight to see!

(words by Guinn Hodgson)
